Book#
Lantern#
The Lantern item (localized as "Lamp") found in A Link to the Past originally existed in Link's Awakening as well. It may have been discarded due to its utility overlapping with the Magic Powder. It would have lit up darkened rooms (as seen in the TOURCK and TOURST functions in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\1\ZPL.DMG) and lit lanterns (as seen in the TONDT function in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\3\ZEN.DMG).
Other commented-out code related to this item can be seen by searching for "TOUROU" (the Japanese name of the item) and "TOUR".
Memo#
A few traces remain of some kind of memo item. For example, in this trigger input check in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\1\ZPL.DMG (the player code file), which checks which inventory item to use, references to the memo item and its function are overwritten by the shovel (PSKOP) and the dig function (ANAHST).

Code and text can be found for an unused ammunition item once used by the Magical Rod, which is seen with a counter reading 89 in the prerelease screenshot above.
Other commented-out code related to this item can be located by searching for labels like RODCT, RODPWBUY, and RDCTST.

Changed Items#
Keys#
Lion Key
This item became the Tail Key. A removed lion statue overworld tile associated with it can be seen on an early map for the game in front of the dungeon that turned into Tail Cave.
Dragon Key
The only other mention of a dragon in the code is linked to dungeon tiles DKAN0 to DKAN3, which are described with the comment "ドラゴン用壁壊れ" (Breakable Wall for Dragon). These tiles make up the walls that Slime Eel breaks through.
Parrot Key
Skull Key
Snake Key
The only other mention of a snake in the code is Slime Eel, whose entity name is BSNAK (Boss Snake) and whose code section in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\3\ZE3.DMG has the header "穴 蛇 ボス" (Hole Snake Boss).
Pendant#
This item became the Stone Slab Fragment.
Pickups#
In the final game, Link can pick up two items that temporarily enhance his abilities: the Piece of Power and the Guardian Acorn. However, there's evidence to suggest that there were once three of these items, and that they all belonged to a group.
Curiously, the Oracle games started life as a trilogy whose entries were respectively called Mystical Seed of Power, Mystical Seed of Wisdom, and Mystical Seed of Courage. The word for "seed" in the Japanese name of the Oracle games, "ふしぎの木の実" (Mysterious Seed) is the same word that's translated as "Acorn" in Link's Awakening.
Piece of Power#
Pieces of Power drop based on how many enemies Link has killed and how many Heart Containers he has. Collecting one increases Link's speed by 25% and doubles his sword strength and knockback until he gets hit three times, leaves the overworld, or a certain amount of time elapses.
A commented-out label in ZRAM.DMG, standing for "Collect 20", indicates that Link could have collected up to twenty Pieces of Power. The comment next to it translates to "Sword power chip Max 20".
;;;CLC20 EQU $DB6E ; Ken power chip Max 20
In the final game, the CLC20 label was reassigned to RAM address DB0F, and repurposed to track the number of Secret Seashells Link has collected.
Guardian Acorn#
Guardian Acorns drop after Link defeats 12 enemies in a row without taking damage. It temporarily cuts received damage in half.
The header above the labels associated with this entity (KINOMCD and KINOMMV) reads "守りのかけら" (Piece of Protection), linking it more closely to the final game's Piece of Power and suggesting that this was its original name. Additionally, it once used graphical offsets $9E,$10, instead of $AE,$10.
Its associated RAM address ("MAMOR", short for "MAMORI," Which means "protection") was commented out in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\1\ZRAM.DMG and is used by CLC20 in the final game. CLC20 was once used by the Piece of Power, but now it's used to track how many Seashells link has collected. There isn't any remaining code associated with this RAM label.
;MAMOR EQU $DB0F
Lucky Acorn#
A commented-out list of early crane game items contains a "ラッキーな木のみ" (Lucky Acorn) item. It used the same graphical offsets ($9E,$10) as the ones once used by the Guardian Acorn. What its function was is unclear.
Its associated RAM address was commented out in SRD_DMG_Zelda_JP_v0\1\ZRAM.DMG, and is used by MEGAF, the Magnifying Lens, in the final game. The only code associated with this RAM label is linked to the crane game.
;LUCKY EQU $DB0E
Early Chest Values#
The files ZDB.DMG, ZE5.DMG, and ZEN.DMG contain a section called "Danjyon Takaramono data", meaning "Dungeon Treasure Data". The section defines a list of values for obtaining various items from treasure chests. Not all are functional in the final game.

Early Chest Locations and Contents#
ZDB.DMG also contains a label called DJTKDT (Dungeon Treasure Data) which makes use of the chest item labels above to define in which overworld map squares and dungeon rooms treasure chests are found, and what they contain. Not all of this information matches the final game.
Overworld#
- C01 = 50 Rupees (became 20, according to the corresponding text ID)
- C02 = 20 Rupees (became 50, according to the corresponding text ID)
- C10 = 100 Rupees
- GK1 = Lion Key (became the Tail Key, according to the corresponding text ID)
- KAI = Seashell
The three Seashells on this overworld map are in the same spots as Seashells can be found in the final game, but there are far fewer overall. The dungeon key is also in the same spot.
