3D Models

This is a sub-page of Development:Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Yoshi's Island uses a number of 3D models to spell out the words "PAUSE" and "GAME OVER" on the pause and game over screens, respectively. That means the used letters are A, E, G, M, O, P, R, S, U, and V. However, a number of unused letters and symbols can be found in the code.

The extant models also differ by game version and region. For example, the European French game over screen reads "PERDU !!" (LOST !!), with unique models for the letter D (MOJPOL_D) and the double exclamation mark (MOJPOL_bik).

ys_chip0.asm#

In addition to the letters in PAUSE and GAME OVER, 日本_Ver0\chip\ys_chip0.asm contains models for the letters L, C, and T (to spell SELECT), the numbers 0 to 9, a star, a plus sign, and a question mark. These can be found by searching for MOJPOLIN (Text Character Polygon Initialization) and scrolling down.

"SELECT" is used on the pause screen of the ys_romX_0 prototype.

The following offsets are equivalents to the source code's GMPASMJNO (presumably short for Game Pause Moji Number, "moji" translating to "text character"):

J 1.0: DC5B-DC5F
J 1.1 and 1.2: CA17-CA1B
U 1.0: CA60-CA64
U 1.1: CA6D-CA71
E 1.0: CBF8-CBFC
E 1.1: CC01-CC05

These can be changed to any value from 0x00 to 0x19 to view the 3D letter models in the pause screen.

Not pictured here is the fact that the plus sign at value 14 (PURAS_POL) was replaced with a blank model (CLEAR_POL) in (J) 1.1.

From (J) 1.2 onward, which includes the (U) version and both (E) versions, the models are identical to those in (J) 1.1.
