This page details development materials of Rise of the Triad (1994).

This page details all sorts of ludicrous development leftovers from Rise of the Triad.

Source Code#

To do:
Add more stuff here.

On December 20, 2002, 3D Realms released the source code of Rise of the Triad.

Cinematic Engine#

In the game's source code release, many in-game cinematic code files exist, but mostly unused. Rather, everything "cinematic" is scripted in basic text files.

September 1993 Spec Document#

To do:
Add differences from here.

On February 27th, 2001, 3D Realms would release the contents of the original team design spec written by Tom Hall from September 1993, containing episode descriptions, an outline of where the storyline was to go, and new features in the Wolfenstein game engine

Early Graphics#

To do:
Better organization along with descriptions and notes about these.

Released alongside the spec document were several sprite sheets with early graphics. The precise date of these is unknown, but they are similar to the leaked 1993 prototypes.

Capture Sessions#

In 2014, Joe Seigler would post to YouTube some capture session videos. The photo above features the VHS tapes that these were sourced from. Quotes are from the videos' descriptions.

Note that these videos have no sound. No speaking was present in the original footage, and the only sound present on the source tapes was hissing, with Seigler muting in the uploads for viewer convenience.

Low Guard#

Watch on YouTubeWas initially published in an edited-down version on May 3, 2014, before an extended version was released three days later. This video shows the capture session for the Low Guard.

This is video taken somewhere in late 1993/early 1994 and is from the the (male) Low Guard (Steve Quarrella) video capture session for Rise of the Triad. This is an "extended version" in addition to the one already released.

Appearing in this video: Steve Quarrella (guard), William Scarboro, Tom Hall, Steven Hornback, Scott Miller.

Scrapped Characters#

Watch on YouTubePublished on December 20, 2014, showing the unused alternative enemies.

This third in the series of ROTT Video capture sessions shows characters that were captured, and actually put into the game, but ultimately cut. They were generally cut for memory purposes. Back in the days of DOS, you couldn't have unlimited things, and to help with memory overhead, we cut all the alternate characters.

This video shows three actors, the late William Scarboro, Marianna Vayntrub, & Ann Grauerholz being captured for the game.
