Trainer Skills#
Trainer Skills was a planned feature for Pokémon Sun and Moon that would have the players themselves leveling up together with their Pokémon. In context of Poké Rides, they'd gain levels the more they used each Poké Ride, improving their usability.
Tauros Charge and Stoutland Search are the two Poké Rides that remained on final that would have said upgrades. Charizard Glide would have no such upgrades, however, there would be ambulances throughout the map that functioned just like Pokécenters and could have been flown to.
Tauros Charge would have its effect and power changed depending on level, suggesting that there would be different kinds of obstacles it could smash.
Level 1: Small objects
Level 2: Medium objects (Requires 1,000 Steps)
Level 3: Large objects (Requires 3,000 Steps)
Stoutland Search would have had its search range increased.
Level 1: 10m
Level 2: 12m (Requires 5,000 Steps)
Level 3: 15m (Requires 10,000 Steps)
Poké Ride#
Poké Ride |
Concept Art |
Description |
|---|---|---|
Arbok Hide |
|
This Poké Ride would have players riding Arbok's back with a slightly faster movement speed (1.2x the regular movement speed). Holding down the B Button would activate Hide, making Arbok move slower, but evading rustling grass encounters. The document suggests it would be similar to the player's own stealth movement, however, neither Arbok's Hide ability nor a stealth movement for the player were present in final. Years later, a stealth movement feature was added for Pokémon Legends Arceus. The Trainer Skill Level would increase its speed while on Hide mode. |
Rapidash Accel |
|
Rapidash would have a movement speed of 1.5x the player's speed, intended to act like this game's Bicycle. By pressing the B Button, it would move even faster, at 2x. Conceptually, it was too similar to Tauros Charge, and both abilities were mixed together for final (Rapidash's higher movement speed and Tauros' ability to smash boulders). The Trainer Skill Level would increase for how long it could dash. |
Magnezone Float |
|
Magnezone would float in the air, moving at 1.5x the player's speed. It would have no additional features when pressing any buttons, as its main usage would be to travel across rough terrain. Mechanically, it was replaced by Mudsdale Gallop in final. The Trainer Skill Level would increase its speed. This design would actually end up being used in the Pokémon Anime. |
Vivillon Jump |
No Concept Art |
Instead of being ridden, Vivillon would've attached itself to the player's back. By pressing the B Button, it would allow the player to jump over obstacles such as ledges, fences, holes, etc. A jump mechanic was eventually introduced in Pokémon Legends Arceus when riding Wyrdeer. The Trainer Skill Level would increase how long it would jump. |
Weezing Poké Ride#

Although there's concept art for a Weezing Poké Ride, there's no information of how it could've worked. Given that Weezing floats, it's possible it was an early idea for the scrapped Magnezone Poké Ride, or it could've been an alternate idea for Vivillon's, given this one didn't even get concept art.
Early Names#
Poké Ride was initially called Ride Pokémon (ライドポケモン) in Japanese. Final had those words swapped, becoming Pokémon Ride (ポケモンライド) instead.
