This is a sub-page of Development:Pokémon Emerald.

Included in GFDocs.7z are localization glossaries for games ranging from Pokémon Red and Blue to Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. These xls files include explanations of the localized names and the process they went through to come up with them, as well as rejected names. These are all included in the subfolders of ★ポケモン監修用資料\ローカライズ関連\グロッサリ.

Here, the contents of each sheet will be split into relevant categories for ease of reading, with translation notes appearing in [brackets].

English#

The following information comes from the XLS sheet 007005_【Emerald】北米経緯041112.xls.

Items#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

KNOWLEDGE SIGN

KNOWLEDGE SYMBOL

Unchanged. If the character limit is too tight, an other word will be used. In that case, the Battle Frontier "symbols" will be changed to "signs" for consistency.

Don't use. We want to go with "SYMBOL" as much as possible.
"SYMBOL" has a strong connotation, which matches the Frontier Brains. It is also used as a status symbol. "SIGN" has a broader meaning. Originally, it meant "sign/symbol", but here it leans more toward "trace/evidence".
→Both feel natural when used, but we would like to go with "symbol" if possible.

Locations#

Name

Explanation

FARAWAY ISLAND

A direct translation would be "UTMOST [ISLAND]", but this would make it sound less like a location name. It also has a numerical meaning, so we avoided using it. We tried the expression "FARAWAY", which means "distant".

ARTISAN CAVE

The word "atelier" is not familiar to English-speakers, so we chose "artisan" as it is closer in meaning.
The original word translates to "studio", but this is too broad, so we went with "artisan" to narrow down the meaning.

Characters#

Name

Explanation

JUAN

Since he is a playboy, we chose "JUAN" from Don Juan to make it easy to picture. Playboy-like names can be tricky to use, so we would like to go with JUAN.

SCOTT

The name SCOTT is a play on SCOUT, as the character scouts strong trainers.

WALDA PEPPER

It was difficult to include all the keywords, "box,", "wallpaper,", and "soothing". We chose "wallpaper" as the motif, because it sounds like a person's name, while still being meaningful. Wallpaper can be expressed as Wall_Paper, but being too direct would make it less interesting, so we went with Walda Pepper.

NOLAND

The name was chosen to evoke KNOWLEDGE. It gives an intellectual impression.

GRETA

The name is based on the letters G and T. It has a bit of German influence.

TUCKER

We chose a name that would evoke the idea of "tactics".

LUCY

The name was chosen to evoke LUCK.

SPENCER

The name was chosen to evoke SPIRITS.

BRANDON

The name was chosen to evoke BRAVE.

ANABEL

The name is based on the word "ability", so the origin is a little difficult to understand. However, it's still understandable because it's composed of A, B, and L.

Titles#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

DOME MEGASTAR

DOME ACE

Although the English word "superstar" has become more versatile in recent years, it has come to have a cheap impression, and unfortunately it compares poorly to other Frontier Brains. Even if "star" is kept, it can be made to sound stronger by using a slightly different prefix.

Don't use ("DOME ACE" is better).

PIKE MAJESTY

PIKE QUEEN

”Queen" would be fine, but her long black hair and taciturn nature give her a noble impression. As such, we chose the word "majesty", which has an image of nobility. Both men and women can use the word majesty.

Don't use, the meaning is different.
The character isn't royalty or a noble, but a "Queen" in the sense of an "S&M Queen". So "PIKE MAJESTY" has a different meaning.

  • This is based on the image of Gogo Yubari from "Kill Bill".

PALACE GUARDIAN

PALACE MAVEN

Unchanged.

Don't use (too many characters).

PYRAMID PHARAO

PYRAMID KING

Since it's a pyramid, the name "Pharaoh" sounds like a more appropriate English name, but what do you think?

Don't use (too many characters).

BATTLE MAIDEN

SALON MAIDEN

The word "Tycoon" originally meant "great lord", so it's an oriental word, and we thought it would be more appropriate for the Battle Arena. As such, we decided not to use it. Instead, since this Frontier Brain is a woman, we decided to call her "Maiden".
[Anabel is known as the "Tower Tycoon" in the Japanese version.]

Don't use (too many characters).
It would be better if it was balanced with other titles, so "SALON MAIDEN" is OK while "TOWER KEEPER" isn't.

TOWER KEEPER

The word "Tycoon" originally meant "great lord", so it's an oriental word, and we thought it would be more appropriate for the Battle Arena. As such, we decided not to use it. Instead, we called her a "Keeper because a tower is not something that guards, but something that keeps or protects.

It would be better if it was balanced with other titles.
Don't use ("KEEPER" seems a bit weak).

BATTLE TOURNAMENT

BATTLE TOURNEY

Unchanged. Since the number of characters in "tournament" may exceed the limit, we would appreciate your approval of the abbreviation "tourney".

Don't use (too many characters).
*Please refer to the set character limit.

Items#

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

CARTE MARINE

VIEILLECARTE

A literal translation would be too long, so we left out the word "old".

Don't use. A name that makes it clear that it's "old" or was "written a long time ago" would be better.
If "nautical chart" is too long, you can just call it a "map".

PASSE COMBAT

PASSE ZONE

Translates to "Battle Pass".

Don't use. Since this refers to Pokémon battles in general, it would be better to use a name that expresses that it's a "pass" that is only applicable to the Battle Frontier.

CAPUCINE

CATHY

A French name reminiscent of "Capacité" (ability).

Don't use (too many characters).

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

BERCIA BOFOND

The name "BERCIA" comes from the verb "bercer", which means "to soothe".
The surname "BOFOND" is a combination of "BOITE" (box) and "FOND" (wallpaper).
[A meaning not mentioned here is that BOFOND can be read as "Beau Fond", or "nice wallpaper".]

SAM

A French name that brings to mind the word "savoir" (knowledge).

CAROLE

The name "Carole" shares three letters ("C", "A", and "R") with the word "cran" (guts).

TAKIM

This name was created to evoke the word "tactique" (tactic).

CHARLINE

A French name that brings to mind the word "chance" (luck).

ESTEBAN

The first two letters are the same as "esprit" (spirit).

BAYAR

From the name of a real knight, "Bayard". He was known as a fearless knight, so when French people hear this name, they associate it with "bravery". It also has the same initials as "BRAVOURE" (bravery).

CATHY

A French name reminiscent of "Capacité" (ability).

SEEKARTE

ALTE KARTE

A literal translation would be too long, so we left out the word "old".

Don't use. A name that makes it clear that it's "old" or was "written a long time ago" would be better.
If "nautical chart" is too long, you can just call it a "map".

KAMPFEILANDPASS

KAMPFZONENPASS

Literal translation.

Don't use (the name of "Battle Frontier" has been decided as "KAMPFZONE").

KAMPFGEBIETSPASS

"KAMPFGEBIETSPASS" is a direct translation of "Battle Frontier [pass]".

MEDAILLE

SYMBOL

"MEDAILLE" means "medal". It's an allusion to the Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals.

The abstract name "symbol" is preferable.

KENNTNISMEDAILLE

KENNTNISSYMBOL

Literal translation.

Don't use (the translation of "symbol" has been changed).

GROBMEDAILLE

GROBSYMBOL

"GROB" means "tough".
It's very hard to find a German word that starts with "G", like "GRETA", and has a similar meaning to "guts."

TAKTIKMEDAILLE

TAKTIKSYMBOL

Literal translation.

MARINE CAVE

OZEANHÖHLE

Literal translation.

Don't use (in German, "MARINE" means "Navy").

KAMPFEILAND

KAMPFZONE

"KAMPFEILAND" means "Battle Island", which makes more sense since the Battle Frontier takes up an entire island.

Don't use. It's better to have a name that conveys the image of the "front line of Pokémon battles", rather than focusing on the location (an island).

KAMPFGRENZE

A literal translation of "Frontier".

This would mean "border line," so that's a no-go.
"GRENZE" also means "limit", so it would mean "battle limit", which gives the wrong impression, so that's a no-go.

KAMPFGEBIET

Translates to "Battle Area".

Don't use ("KAMPFZONE" is better).

KAMPFDOJO

KAMPFRING

Since the location has a Japanese motif, a name that expresses a Japanese image, such as "dojo", was preferred. As such, "Battle Dojo" was chosen.

Don't use. The term "KAMPF-DOJO" is already used as the translation of "Fighting Dojo" in Red, Blue, FireRed, and LeafGreen.

KAMPFPFAD

KAMPFIPITIS

Translates to "BATTLE PATH".

Don't use. A direct translation of "Battle Tube" [Battle Pike's JP name] is preferred, or a name using words that evoke the image of a snake.

Explanation

GIACOMO

JUAN

The name Casanova is synonymous with playboy, and is well known in Germany.

Don't use. JUAN is a better fit for the character.

FINCHUS

SCOTT

A combination of the German words "finden" (to find) and an anagram of "suchen" (to look for). "FINCHUS" means "to look for and find".

Don't use. SCOTT is a better fit for the character.

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

TAPETRA SCHLÄFER

"TAPETE" is German for "wallpaper", and "PETRA" is a German female name. "SCHLÄFER" means "SLEEPER" and is similar to the common German surname "SCHÄFER."

KEVIN

A name widely used in Germany, it evokes "KENNTNIS" (knowledge).

TASSO

Since "TUCKER" isn't a German name, we took the first two letters of "TAKTIK" (tactics) to create "TASSO".

LOTTE

This name evokes the word "LOS" (luck).

SERENUS

A German name that brings to mind "SEELE", which means "heart" or "soul".

BRIAN

A name related to "BRAVUR" (courage).

Titles#

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

PFADKÖNIGIN

PFIPITISTIN

Means "PATH QUEEN". "Tube" was translated as "PATH" (see above).
[Refers to the early Battle Pike name entry.]

Don't use (the translation of "Battle Pike" has been changed).

PFIPITISKÖNIGIN

Literal translation.
The name of the Battle Pike and "KÖNIGIN" (7 letters), which translates to "Queen".

Don't use (exceeds the 12 character limit).

KASTELLAN

PALASTREGENT

"KASTELLAN" means something like "castle lord". We think it means "one who protects the castle."

"Castle lord" is not allowed because it would make him "under the lord (number two)".

PHARAO

PYRAKÖNIG

King of the Pyramid = King of Egypt (Pharaoh).

Don't use. "Pyramid" and "King" are abstract words. "Pharaoh" is a straightforward name, and can be misunderstood as having a deep connection to Egypt.

PYRAMIDENKÖNIG

Literal translation.

Don't use (exceeds the 12 character limit).

ERFOLGSHALLE

AUFSICHTSHALLE

"ERFOLGSHALLE" means "Success Hall".

Don't use. Rather than meaning "successful", it's based on the rules of Battle Palace (Pokémon choose their moves to fight, not instructions from the player).

FÖRDERHALLE

"FÖRDER" comes from the verb "FÖRDERN" (to support financially or emotionally). It means something like "Cheering Hall."

Don't use (AUFSICHTSHALLE is better).

CARTA MARINA

MAPA VIEJO

A literal translation, but it doesn't include the word "old" because that would exceed the 12 character limit.

Don't use. A name that makes it clear that it's "old" or was "written a long time ago" would be better.
If "nautical chart" is too long, you can just call it a "map".

FRENTE de COMBATE

FRENTE de BATALLA

A literal translation of "Battle Front". A direct translation of "frontier" ("frontera") would be too long, and "Frontera de Combate" ("battle frontier") sounds unnatural in Spanish. "Frente", or "Front," also refers to the front line of a battlefield.

Don't use (to stay consistent with the Battle Tower).

TIENDA DE COMBATE

TIENDA DE BATALA

Literal translation.

Don't use (to stay consistent with the Battle Frontier).

PRISMA BATALLA

PIRÁMIDE BATALLA

Due to the character limit, we couldn't use the direct translation of "Pyramid + battle", "PIRÁMIDE BATALLA". As such, we used "PRISMA" (PRISM) instead of "pyramid".

Don’t use ("PIRÁMIDE BATALLA" is better). "Prism" gives the impression of a "transparent triangular prism", which we thought doesn't match the appearance of the Battle Pyramid.

TÁCITO

TACITO

[Same etymology as final name.]

Not allowed because the font will be garbled during communication.

VALENTÍN

DESIRÉ

DESTRA

DESIRÉ: A name that sounds like "DESTREZA."
[The final etymology is then copied verbatim.]

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

GALANO

Note: In Spanish, you can also use "JUAN" after Don Juan, but in Spain "Juan" is a very common name. Since Juan has a special position as a gym leader, we wanted his name to be something uncommon and out of the ordinary.
GALANO: This name means "polite to women (like a knight)" (a direct translation of the English "gallant"). In Spanish, it also has the nuance of "handsome".
"GALANO" also has a sound that evokes "water" (AGUA).
It is also easy to associate with Miki's Spanish name "PLUBIO".

TRETO

TRETO: This name is based on "TROTAMUNDOS" (a direct translation of the English word "globetrotter"), which means "someone who travels around the world". It's also easy to associate with "FRENTE", a direct translation of "frontier."

ANAPEL

ANAPEL is made up of the following words: ANA, NANA, and PAPEL. ANA: Female name
NANA: Literal translation of "Lullaby"
PAPEL: Literal translation of "paper", because "wallpaper" is always "PAPEL PINTADO" in Spanish, which is too long.

SABINO

SABINO: A male name that evokes the direct translation of "Knowledge", "SABER".

CORO

CORO: A female name that evokes the direct translation of "Guts", "CORAJE".

TACITO

TACITO: A male name reminiscent of "TÁCTICA" (literal translation of "tactics").

FORTUNIA

FORTUNIA: This name was based on "FORTUNATA", a female name which is not used much these days. "FORTUNATA" has a slightly old-fashioned feel, but by changing the ending to "-UNIA," we gave it a modern touch (suitable for a 19 year old girl). It also evokes the direct translation of "LUCK", which is "FORTUNA."

ANICETO

ANICETO: A male name that brings to mind "ÁNIMO", the direct translation of "Spirits". This name is also a bit old-fashioned and not one one used by today's generation. As such, it makes you think of a much older man.

VALENTE

VALENTE: A male name that evokes the direct translation of "VALENTÍA", "courage."

DESTRA

DESTREZA: A direct translation of "Skill". The word "Ability" literally translates to "habilidad", but we didn't go with it because it starts with an "H" and it's hard to think of a name that would evoke "habilidad".

FRONTE LOTTA

PARCO LOTTA

Literal translation.

"FRONTE" means "front line", especially when used with "LOTTA" (battle) it strongly evokes images of actual wars (especially the Western Front, where brutal trench warfare occurred during World War I). As such, it's best to avoid this word in the game.

FRONTIERA LOTTA

Don't use. A direct translation doesn't convey the same feeling. In Italian, the direct translation of "FRONTIER" is "FRONTIERA", which means "border". So translating it like that gives the wrong impression, meaning "border line".

Characters#

Name

Explanation

RODOLFO

Italian doesn't have names with "j" in them, so "JUAN" is difficult for Italians to pronounce. The Italian equivalent of "JUAN" is "GIOVANNI," but this name is already used for the leader of Team Rocket.
"RODOLFO" is taken from Rodolfo Valentino, an actor from the early 20th century who was known to be a playboy.

NINA DE SFONDIS

NINA is a girl's name that evokes a lullaby (NINNANANNA).
"DE SFONDIS" is based on the Italian word for wallpaper (SFONDO), with the "DE" added, which is common in Italian surnames. It feels like a normal surname.

SAVINO

SAVINO: A male name of Latin origin meaning "wise man".

VALENTINA

A common female name in Italy, related to "VALORE" (skillful) and "VALENTE" (expert).

TOLOMEO

TOLOMEO is an Italian name, originally from Ancient Greece, meaning "warrior". It's also the name of a famous ancient astronomer.

FORTUNATA

FORTUNATA: A female name of Latin origin meaning "luck."

SPARTACO

A name of Greek origin that sounds similar to "Spirit" and evokes the image of a warrior.

BALDO

A male name of Danish origin meaning "brave and daring" (in Italian "BALDANZA" means "boldness").

ALBERTA

ANABEL's Italian equivalent, ANABELLA, has the image of an upper-class young lady. ALBERTA is an Italian female name which is also similar to "ABILITÀ" (ability).
