Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Parts of the source code for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas have surfaced through materials related to the mobile and Definitive Edition versions, as well as documentation shared on GTAForums. These reveal a number of unused systems, debug features, and unfinished mechanics.

---

Definitive Edition Leaks#

Unused Mission Text#

The file notusedtext.txt contains a large amount of unused and early mission-related text. Many of these reference alternate objectives, earlier story concepts, or missions that were cut or heavily reworked.

CRASH2#

Early references to a mission involving CRASH and territory conflicts, possibly tied to an earlier version of Doberman.

BCE1#

Mentions a rescue mission involving Cesar and Kendl, which does not appear in the final game.

HEIST8#

References to an RC-based camera mission involving surveillance.

DOC1#

Early concept of a mission involving Madd Dogg and a character named "Dr. G".

CRASH5#

Indicates a mission involving bridge explosives, not present in the final game.

WUZI3#

Includes references to stealth gameplay and disguise mechanics (including a gimp suit), suggesting earlier mission designs.

---

Unused / Unfinished Engine Features#

Ragdoll System#

Evidence in the codebase indicates that a ragdoll physics system was under development as early as 2003.

Residual implementation includes references to inverse kinematics (IK) chains and bone manipulation logic, suggesting that dynamic, physics-driven animation was partially explored.

No complete or functional ragdoll system exists in the final build, and the remaining code is unused.

Specular Vehicle Lighting#

There are indications that vehicles were intended to support specular lighting. This functionality is not present in the final PC version, and no complete implementation exists in the shipped game.

Volumetric Shadows#

Incomplete and heavily missing code references a "volumetric shadow" system. The lack of supporting implementation suggests the feature was never completed.

Ctornado#

The game contains references to a system or effect labeled "ctornado". The associated implementation is heavily incomplete or missing, and its intended purpose is unknown.

---

Rendering and Graphics Remnants#

RpToon Shader (GTA III E3 Beta)#

Unused code referencing the RenderWare "RpToon" shader, originally seen in early builds of Grand Theft Auto III, exists within the game.

The required RenderWare plugin is not included, making the feature unusable.

Shader-Based Optimization Work#

Several unfinished rendering optimizations exist in the codebase, including:

  • Increased use of vertex and pixel shaders instead of prelighting.
  • Minor improvements to grass rendering.

These optimizations were not compiled into the final release, likely due to time constraints.

---

Unused Gameplay and Mechanics#

Skateboard#

There is unused code referencing a skateboard. No complete implementation exists, and the feature is not accessible in normal gameplay.

First-Person Mode Development#

Development of a first-person mode appears to have continued into San Andreas. Evidence includes leftover tasks and uncompiled code related to camera behavior.

---

Platform-Specific and Technical Remnants#

PC Memory Manager Semaphore#

The PC version contains evidence that semaphore-based synchronization was intended for the memory manager. This functionality is not active in the final build.

Additional Unused Optimizations#

Several additional optimizations were planned but not compiled into the final release.

---

Debug and Development Features#

Numerous debug and development-related systems remain in the codebase, often disabled or compiled out in retail builds.

These include:

  • Debug visualization systems
  • Internal testing tools
  • Leftover systems dating back to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

---

Cut Content and Systems#

PS2 Online Multiplayer#

There are remnants of a more or less complete online multiplayer implementation for the PlayStation 2 version, including references to multiple game modes.

In-Game Editors#

The game contains references to internal tools such as:

  • Cutscene editor
  • Scene or map editing tools

These were likely used during development and were not included in the retail version.

Fakeheli#

Unused code referencing a system or entity labeled "fakeheli" exists, though its exact purpose is unclear.

Legacy Audio System#

Parts of an older or alternative audio system remain in the codebase, suggesting transitions between implementations during development.
