This page details bugs of The King of Fighters '94 (Neo Geo).
General#
Command Grab OTG#
In KOF '94, and all following entries in the series, it is possible to combo from normals into command grabs. In this game specifically, should one combo into a command grab, then go up and perform the command grab again whilst the opponent is knocked down, it will be able to connect fully regardless of their knocked down state which is not normally possible. If one is able to reach the opponent again after the following knockdown they can repeat the process until K.O., effectively acting as an infinite.
Throw Damage Manipulation#
Standard throws, ones performed by holding forward and C or D, are meant to do set damage to the opponent. Should one perform any other move before the opponent lands from the throw, they will instead take the damage properties of the most recently performed move. Whether a character can take advantage of this depends on their throws. Someone like Terry throws the opponent directly on the ground and can't take advantage of it, but someone like Athena throws the opponent through the air before they land, and is thus more capable of exploiting this.
Special Move Morphing#
Characters normally have two available variants of their special moves; a light and heavy version. For some characters' special moves with two possible variants, should they perform the motion for one variant, then perform the same motion again for the opposite strength on a punch button (or simply perform a quarter-circle forward regardless of the move), said move will either become said alternate version of the move or a weird hybrid version that gains the properties of both light and heavy versions. The specific properties gained depends on the timing of the second input.
For example, Kyo's 101 Shiki usually performs one kick for the light version and three kicks for the heavy version. A morphed light version can instead do the light version's first kick into the heavy version's third kick, and a morphed heavy version will do the first two kicks without the finisher.
Interestingly, this bug did not get fixed in The King of Fighters '95.
Misc.#
Storm Bringer Damage Boost#
Heidern's Storm Bringer is a command grab that is meant to do a set medium amount of damage whilst draining a bit of the opponent's health. For some inexplicable reason, should one perform a Moon Slasher without hitting the opponent, then use Storm Bringer on them without using any other move in-between, it will get a drastic damage boost, sometimes enough to even K.O. in one grab.
Curiously, this bug has since been incorporated as a feature in Heidern's most recent iterations in KOF XIV and XV, where one can again whiff a Moon Slasher to get increased damage on Storm Bringer, though said boost is much less drastic than in '94.
Glitchy Backgrounds When Playing As Rugal#
When Rugal enters his second phase during his boss fight, the stage changes its color palette to match. This effect is tied directly to Rugal's character slot. Hence, if one hacks the game to play as Rugal, and enters his second form by either selecting the empty slot next to 1st form Rugal on the Order Select, or by losing the first round on any stage besides his own, the game will try to apply the palette change to the current stage that you're fighting on, resulting in some very glitchy-looking stage backgrounds.
First Phase Rugal's Charge#
First phase Rugal is the only character in the game to not have a charge animation at all. When he charges meter, he turns invisible until either he stops charging or the meter is full, though the only way to see this is by hacking the game to make Rugal playable, since the CPU Rugal in 1P Mode never charges meter during the first phase of his boss fight. For some reason, charging also makes him invincible to pretty much everything that isn't a throw.
