This page details bugs of Police Quest II: The Vengeance.
Game Glitches#
Improper Walking#
This glitch can be done at the office, warehouse and motel. To perform this trick, the player must press a directional key as the game loads between the in-vehicle screen and the location screen as Sonny gets out of the car. If done right, the player will start to move in a direction regardless of which way he is facing, which can result in an unusual 'moonwalking'-like appearance. This was mostly fixed by version 1.002.011 (It is still possible to do this at the office using Sonny's personal vehicle). |
My Gun IS Sighted!#
There is a small window during the hijacking after the stewardess falls on the floor where if Sonny draws his gun and fires right before the hijacker attacks Sonny, the bullet hit will register too late and the hijacker's kill animation begins, killing the player, instead. Given there is no unique circumstance for this, the player is told they missed because the gun was not sighted, even if it is. This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (Sonny's bullet registers a kill much faster and the game prevents the player from firing once the hijacker performs his kill animation). |
Score: ... 301 out of 300?!#
While the dialogue for it has always been in the game since 1.001.000, the scripting in script.061 was edited in 1.002.011 to include the option to ask officer Gelepsi to call a Coroner on your behalf. While it sets the same flag as radioing the call, yourself, it awards the player the wrong amount of points and can lead to a score that exceeds the game's normal 300 limit. This glitch was introduced in 1.002.011 and is carried into JP1.000.052. |
Unlimited Points?#
In Marie's house, the ashtray can be dusted and prints collected. These prints use the same inventory item as the prints collected from the jailer's car. On top of it, there is nothing in the game that tracks that these prints have been collected. Since evidence counts for one point each when booked, the player can (without limit) go to Marie's house, pick up the prints and bring them back to the station to earn a point, up to a maximum of 32767 before the value loops back and becomes a negative number. This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (It is no longer possible to get prints at the house). |
Where is Keith?!#
There are instances where not bringing Keith along to a scene will result in the game crashing.
Airport |
|
Purchase a pair of tickets to somewhere, get rid of Keith, then attempt to board the airplane. The game throws the player an "oops" since it (normally) calls for Keith to follow the player. This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (The game claims you missed the flight while Keith is MIA). |
|
Cotton Cove |
|
Getting hit by the Bainsmobile without Keith around softlocks the game. This appears in 1.001.000 and 1.002.011. This cannot happen in the JP version since the car scene is unused on this screen. |
|
Warehouse |
|
The glitch happens immediately after the player gets out of the car. The script has officer Gelepsi begin his recounting of what happened, then partway through the game throws the player an "oops". This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
|
Motel |
|
After the player obtains a warrant and the room key, they can open the door. If the player does not have Keith, but brought backup to the scene, the game throws the player an "oops". This glitch was introduced in 1.002.011 and is carried into JP1.000.052. |
|
Won't Take "NO" for an Answer!#
None of the usual means to refuse an invitation to a dinner date with Marie work in V1.001.000. The player can say 'no' and she only appears to hang up, but is still on the line. Player can ask questions and comments on things not related to the dinner date, but all that will do is confused her. The player can curse and swear at her and she will take it as a yes. The player can hang up on her and she will take it as a yes. If the player calls her, a dinner date is in the inevitable outcome. This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (Sonny can now turn her down). |
Control Room#
|
Ordering Bains to "HALT" will cause him to stop and shoot wherever he stands, forcing the player to shoot at him immediately to prevent him from killing Sonny. The player can start firing back and kill Bains immediately. The cutscene will start to play, but without Bains in the proper spot for Sonny to walk over to the body, the game becomes softlocked.
This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
Cotton Cove#
If the player escapes the Bains ambush, rather than engaging Bains and makes it out before getting shot, Sonny's animation speed glitches. Players can observe this by watching Sonny taking twice as long to complete a full walking cycle as Keith (who is walking behind Sonny). This will fix itself upon exiting the screen. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
|
If the player escapes the Bains ambush, rather than engaging and happens to walk off the screen as Bains fires his third shot, the next screen over glitches Sonny's movement animation by replacing it with a dying cycle that loops over. This animation prevents the player from moving up and down. It can be cancelled by performing some other action like drawing Sonny's gun. This appears to be fixed by version 1.002.011 by removing the delay between Bains firing his gun and Sonny getting killed. ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO7hlbMjxpg, Sierra Art]: source needed) |
|
During the shootout, if Sonny's fires during Bains' final shot, he will manage to escape, but Sonny will 'start' to fall to ground from a fatal wound, but stays in mid-air right up to the 'game over' screen. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II, though in versions past 1.001.000, the death animation will complete, not leave the player hanging in the air. |
|
If the player is hit at the very edge of the screen by the Bainsmobile, the vehicle will drive off, back up into the middle of the screen, then drive off again. Keith will get off his comment about who is driving the vehicle, then the game freezes. This is partially fixed by version 1.002.011. The glitch can still happen, though it is unlikely the player will see the vehicle backing up. This cannot happen in the JP version since and the car scene is unused on this screen. |
|
If the player is firing the gun while the van with Officer Moore inside arrives, different events can happen:
|
|
If the player is run over by the Bainsmobile on the far screen, the player will get the caption for when they win the game, then the game over screen, allowing the player to restart/restore/quit. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
|
Homicide Office#
This glitch happens during Day 2 if the player has a conversation with the captain that overrides the usual conversation (with him giving orders to go to the Warehouse). The only way for this to occur is for the player to visit Marie's house before they see the Captain. At that point, the player should access the phone (This does not work with the computer), then hang up. The captain will give his orders to go to the Warehouse, but Sonny is nowhere to be seen. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. In V.1.001.000, Sonny will float across the screen during the conversation with the Captain (after using the phone). |
Motel#
The game pauses while the officer approaches the motel with the warrant. If the players stands in the exact spot where the officer is supposed to stop walking, he will try to walk around the player, then eventually stop on his own and that game will not resume, leaving a player trapped on that screen. This bug only exists in the first version of the game. It does not affect versions 1.002.011 and JP1.000.052. |
|
The trigger for opening the car door is unusually large at the motel, allowing the player to trigger event too far for Sonny to enter the vehicle along with Keith. This can end in one of two ways, depending on which side of the staircase the player is on when they try this:
This appears to be fixed by version JP1.000.052. |
|
Sewer#
This glitch happens under a set of circumstances.
AND
OR
This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (Bains no longer shows up while Sonny fires his gun or falls into the sewer muck). |
|
After rattling the manhole cover and climbing back down, should the player climb up the manhole, Bains will still show up, kill the player and leave. Sonny's dead body is left badly positioned and clipping into the wall. This was fixed by version 1.002.011 (Bains no longer shows up while Sonny is up the ladder). |
|
Attempting to shoot your gun in a methane pocket while the gas mask is on will softlock the game. Menu options are still accessible. This happens in all versions of the game. |
|
On the left side of the sewer is a methane pocket that spans two screens. Moving from the middle left screen to the upper left screen will cause the mask to disappear if the gun has been drawn. The mask is still 'technically' on, but the wrong sprite is being used. On a side note: This glitch will allow a player to shoot a methane gas pocket while wearing a mask. This happens in all versions of the game. |
|
Shooting Range#
Repeatedly pressing PgUp/PgDown (Or 7/9 with the numeric pad) will cause Sonny's arms to move beyond the usual maximum vertical range giving them the impression they are floating in the air. This glitch does not appear 1.001.000, but was introduced in 1.002.011 and is carried into JP1.000.052. (Source: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tP0xc4eOhPE, Space Quest Historian]) |
|
Raising Sonny's arms to fire his gun at the target while the target is moving will result in the arms moving at a slow pace. |
|
Warehouse#
This glitch can only happen under very specific conditions. The "Drive to location" timer must hit 1 after Dispatch confirms Sonny's arrival at the warehouse. When that happens, the normal event is removed, Keith gets out of the vehicle, walks into the fence and asks (while the textbox is partially off-screen) if they are planning to meet someone. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II, though in 1.001.000, the text box is a little higher. |
OOB in Arnie's#
After buying food during the date with Marie, the player can walk Sonny out of bounds along the walls of the restaurant. When the player sits down, Sonny is warped to coordinates 0,0 while the chair view is changed to Sonny sitting down. Additionally, User hasControl is set to 0 so the player is unable to move Sonny. However, after ordering food this is called to be set to 1. The player is now in control again and since the OOB is flagged as walkable, can move Sonny along the walls. |
Graphics Glitches#
Airport#
Happens for one frame when the player enters/exits the airport. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
Motel#
|
The open door is misaligned should the player try to kick it down, rather than use the motel key. This occurs in all versions of Police Quest II. |
Sewer#
Happens while drawing a gun and wearing the gas mask. The transparency color was not properly set for most of the animation frames. This is in versions 1.001.000 and 1.002.011, but was fixed for JP1.000.052. |
|
|
The sewage floats above the bridge near the top of the screen. This applies to both the upper left and lower left screens in the sewer. This is in versions 1.001.000 and 1.002.011. In version JP1.000.052, they shifted the upper muck down a fair bit, but removed the bridge. |
Text Glitches#
Motel#
- There is text for "There is no shotgun" should the player attempt to remove the stolen Browning shotgun from the trunk before retrieving it from the crime scene. Instead, the only thing the player will see is "You don't need to take it out of the trunk".
This is in all versions of Police Quest II
