Pomeg glitch#

The Pomeg glitch is probably one of the most famous glitches in any Pokémon game.

In Emerald only, the Pomeg Berry can be used on Pokémon to increase their friendship, at the cost of 10 HP EVs for each Berry used. If a Pokémon's current HP is very low (1 or 2 HP), using a Pomeg Berry can cause the HP to fall to 0 or even wrap around to 65535 (which is displayed as ?35) in game.

If a Pokémon's current HP is zero, it will be considered fainted (but the player will not white out even if no other Pokémon in the party are alive). If a Pokémon's current HP is 65535, it can be "healed" to 0 HP by using any healing item.

Some interesting results from this glitch are:

  • If the fainted Pokémon is the only Pokémon in the party, entering a battle will trigger the white out as soon as you select any attack.
  • If the only other Pokémon in the party is an Egg, the Egg can be sent out to battle. It will have the species, stats and moveset it would have upon hatching, and it can level up, gain moves and even evolve. Once the Egg hatches, the Pokémon's level is reset to 5, but it will keep its moveset as well as its species if it evolved before hatching.
  • If the only other Pokémon in the party is actually fainted, you can use the first turn to use a Revive to heal the other Pokémon. The game will then immediately force you back to the Pokémon menu, where trying to switch to the now alive Pokémon will trigger the message " is about to use . Will change Pokémon?". If you select Yes to go to the Pokémon menu a third time and then back out by selecting Cancel, the game instead sends out a copy of the opponent's Pokémon. It's impossible to battle with this Pokémon as the game instead forces you right back into the Pokémon menu, where this glitch can be repeated ad infinitum.
  • The above glitch has different effects if the Pokémon affected by the Pomeg glitch is traded to FireRed/LeafGreen or Ruby/Sapphire. In FireRed/LeafGreen, the Pokémon sent out will be a rectangular box whose sprite scrolls up indefinitely, locking up the game. In Ruby/Sapphire, a Bad EGG will be sent out which triggers an instant victory.

The most interesting feature in this glitch, however, is in its ability to force the game to send out the glitch Pokémon ?????????? (ten question marks, or Decamark). When this Pokémon is out, looking at the stats of any valid Pokémon in the party corrupts the game into thinking there are 256 Pokémon in the party, and as a result, the Pokémon menu can be scrolled past the 6th slot to manipulate the game's memory, such as the contents of PC boxes, or anything else imaginable. This glitch is commonly known in the community as Glitzer Popping.
